Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, sometimes experienced as relaxation and/or high focus (directed by the hypnotherapist), whereby the therapist talks to the client in a way so as to induce them into a ‘trance state’.
It is in this trance state where the therapist can speak specifically to the clients subconscious mind and it is here where the therapy and subsequent changes take place.
Specifically changes can occur in the Alpha and Theta brain wave states. For example if a client wanted to stop smoking, once they are sufficiently relaxed and the therapist recognises this (via muscle relaxation, posture, verbal responses, breathing rate/depth and others), suggestions would be made here in order to alter the way the client thinks about smoking and change this for the better.
Absolutely not. Hypnosis will only occur with the clients permission and acceptance of it. The client cannot be forced into a trance. You will be in complete control throughout the session and can re-alert yourself if you feel the need to. As my former mentor used to say, “I am the sat nav guiding your experience, you are the one driving the car”.
During hypnosis, you will not fall asleep. Unlike natural sleep or unconsciousness, hypnosis induces a state of deep relaxation, but not sleep. This state allows for active participation in the therapeutic process, including dialogue with your hypnotherapist.
While you may experience a sense of profound relaxation akin to drifting off, rest assured that you will remain conscious and engaged throughout the session. In this state, your control over your surroundings actually amplifies, surpassing your regular waking capabilities, while allowing selective focus that’s not attainable during normal consciousness.
Fear not, for a gentle hypnotic state of awareness is ample to achieve session goals. Every individual attains a trance suitable for the process. Keep in mind, Hypnosis is just one tool of many that could be utilised to help you overcome any issues and achieve your goals.
Indeed, anyone willing to embrace the experience can be hypnotised. Even those with shorter attention spans possess this capacity. Each session will be tailored to you, your personality, likes/dislikes, goals, etc. As such your experience of hypnosis will be unique and designed to give you the most benefit.
Hypnotic trance feels strangely familiar, resembling moments of deep absorption, meditation, or blissful contemplation. In hypnosis, your mind is guided into a state akin to a meditative journey, where you’re conscious but deeply relaxed, often with closed eyes and stillness.
Deliberate relaxation leads to slowed breathing, muscle relaxation, and a sense of detachment from time and space, inducing a peaceful euphoria. The depth of trance varies, but with trust and willingness, remarkable changes can occur, regardless of depth.
In hypnosis, your awareness shifts inward, disconnecting from external stimuli. This state unlocks the imagination’s full potential, enabling a skilled hypnotherapist to facilitate profound life changes through suggestion.
While hypnosis induces a deeply relaxing sensation akin to a nap, its true power lies in the guided experiences within the trance.
